❐ PURITANICAL SOCIETY❐ FEMINIST FANTASY❐ DYSTOPIAN-ISH❐ VIBING THE GRACE YEAR WITH THE SALEM WITCHES❐ TOLD FROM A SINGLE POV --IMMANUELLE❐ LENGTH OF AUDIO ➯ 11 HOURS, 37 MINUTES❐ I LISTENED ON LIBBY THROUGH MY LIBRARY
This is one of those stories that's difficult to pinpoint a genre...if dystopian, historical and fantasy got together and created a genre that is equal parts of each of them, that would be what this feels like to me. Maybe, we could call it fandystorian. And, I should add that this is also really dark, bloody, sort of depressing, but ultimately ends up having a ray of hope to it...and is totally worth the read/listen.
The world here feels like the Grace Year without the actual grace year...although, it does have a holier than thou leader who thinks he is above reproach...and has the right to do whatever & whoever he wants...plus the stifling oppression of women. The major difference between these two stories, though, is the witches...in TGY the women are called witches...and in TYOTW, they actually are witches. Maybe, my comparison to TGY is unfair since it is one of my all-time fav books, and it did indeed influence my rating...but it's there nonetheless...because while this book is good, it's not quite up to the par.
Brianna Colette was fantastic and really set this on fire, her voice captured the atmosphere of this perfectly. I would for sure recommend listening over reading because of her narration.
