November Re-Cap

While I only read a total of 10 books plus 1 novella this month, which is lower than what I've been reading lately, I've had some really good reads/listens this month. With the exception of one DNF, I only had 2 ratings under 4 and a half stars....so November has totally been a quality reading month over quantity.  I'll take that!  I also started a blog...again.  What can I say, I cannot make up my mind whether or not I want a blog or not.  So...we will see how this goes for me.

This first entry in the Crown of Shards Series opens up with this magically fantastical and intriguing world that feels part medieval mixed with some modern flourishes.  The cover encompasses this medieval-modern-ness that it has going on, perfectly. This is billed as Gladiator meets Game of Thrones (albeit it's a whole lot cleaner than GOT) and from what I know of those works...it's a fairly apt description.

This book doesn't burden you with a whole lot of info dumping, it cuts right to the action and doesn't let up until the end.  This fast-pace is paired with a 28-year-old heroine that isn't the typical teenager heroine that you get with Fantasy.  There is also only a splash of romance and it's kept fairly tame, but for me personally, I hope that the romance heats up a bit in the second book.  Overall this was exquisitely bad-ass and I couldn't stop listening and I totally can't wait to listen to the sequel.

The Nowhere girls started off feeling very YA with emphasis on the Y.  It also had its instances that felt very preachy with its WWJD (what would Jesus do) moments...and I don't do religion all that well.  But it quickly became more than that, it takes the very serious subject matter of rape and gives you an uplifting tale of what you can do to make a difference...to make a stand...when you set your mind and heart on doing so.  It takes the feeling of hopelessness that Asking For It gave me and turned it into something hopeful.  With an exceptionally diverse cast of characters, that totally rocked, this book crept up on me and made me love it.

If I rated for the intensity of the last third of the book, this would be an easy 5 Stars...but I deducted a little for not only the somewhat meandering pace at the beginning of the book but also for the awkward sections of the story where they delved into Caitlin's personal life...they didn't feel relatable to me.  Although, in the first book it worked just fine for me, maybe, it's due to the different locale???  

I love a good profiling case, I find it very intriguing.  I didn't know or remember any of the details of Ted Bundy's actual case, so I went into this basically blind.  I did, however, google it after I finished the book, and I can say there are similarities to that case, but lots of differences too.  Overall, I found the first book the best of the two, but I' m looking forward to the next book in the series.

I really thought this was going to come off as overly heavy with the Young of Young Adult, but it surprised me, it deals with some heavy issues and does it surprisingly well.  With a feel that reminds me of Open Road Summer, this story did not disappoint and I think I liked this even more than that book.  The romance has all the feels, even for YA...and I loved every one of the characters so much.  I was also blown away by the songwriting, especially "you'd be mine" and how it embodies the whole story. I would love to hear it put to music.  Since I'm from Michigan, I loved that Annie and even the Author is too.  There was even a shout-out to Grand Rapids, which I live only a little north of.

Full disclosure:  I don't necessarily know Mary Shelly's story of Frankenstein, I only know of movies and such depicting it.  Also, I'm not a fan of the Classics...

This is not a terrible story, or badly written...I just don't think it was my kind of story.  I couldn't connect with the characters or the story itself...but I know that others have.  It felt overwhelmingly depressing and it switched timelines constantly and I never knew where or what time we were in.  The latter could have been due to listening on audio, with not enough quiet space between each time period to differentiate between them.  Overall, I couldn't keep myself engaged in the story.  The only part I actually liked was the last 45 minutes of the story.

Another win for me in the romance genre...yay...sometimes I feel like I'm losing all my interest in this genre, but books like this one are helping to restore it.

The blurb only tells you about the fiancé who Rachel loses, it only hints at the new man she meets...and he (Jax) is at the center of this story and Jax is one who had a hand in making this story so memorable for me.  This story at its core is about grieving and learning to move on from that grief.  With characters who not only feel real but are also relatable, and a sorrowful but ultimately uplifting storyline to go with them, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Sometimes the simplest of messages can mean so much...to me this story is all about its message...

...and while this story's message is a well-known one, it's still an important one.  The reviews for this are all over the place, some loved and some did not even like.  I obviously really liked it, maybe possibly loved it, even.  Some said it was cliché, and not true to the Viking heritage...I didn't feel that way at all (not that I'm super knowledgeable about Viking heritage).  I believe if you go into this thinking that is Viking-inspired and not true Viking, you won't set yourself up for disappointment.

Maybe, it was the narration that made me so invested in this story...the narration is excellently done, after all.  Maybe it's the fact that it is a stand-alone...I do love stand-alone's.  I think it's both of these things actually...plus the vivid writing and I seriously loved Fiske, and truly loved Eelyn and Fiske together.

I seriously loved the first book in this series...and I almost, but not quite, loved the second book, too.  When I wrote about This Mortal Coil, I said this was completely comprehensible and seriously compelling story, especially for a book involving gene hacking, splicing, decoding and lots of technical terms and such.  I wish I could say that this book was the same for me...and it almost was, I just got a little lost in the beginning (and maybe, a little throughout)...but, eventually things started clicking for me.  The storyline goes in a direction that I didn't see coming at all and the end is kind of mind-blowing.  Almost literally, so.  All I can say is, I'm not looking forward to the wait for the third book.

I don't read a lot of NA lately, because it's really difficult to find something original that doesn't seem like contrived BS.  This is one of the good ones, in fact, I've liked the whole series so far.  Great characters, with real-life issues finding a way to be with one another.  Plus bonus points for integrating the characters from previous books in the series so well, I loved seeing how Josh, Ember, Paisley, and Jagger are doing, also. There were even some twists at the end that I didn't see coming.
