This book had one of the most horrifying scenes I ever read...it involved rats and belly buttons...and I cringed just typing that.  It was so bad...I was on break when I got to that scene...so I was trying to eat...ehh...it was traumatizing...lol.  Nobody in the book world knows this about me...until now, of course...but belly buttons are like my trigger.  I believe this should come with a Trigger-Warning for belly-button horror...or something like that.

But seriously, this book is crazy AF.  Super-graphic-nasty scenes, shit-tastic husbands, shady deals, one bat-shit crazy grandma, a book club (of course) who likes to read trashy crime novels (what's wrong with that?), and one deplorable vampire are just some of what you'll find within these pages.  All that and it still manages to be funny, too...

The narration was performed quite well by Bahni Turpin, her voice and accent worked really well for the atmosphere of this book.

Full disclosure...I didn't always know what was going on in this...it's complex, with lots of layers, but...I really wanted to know what was going on...so much so, that maybe I'll read it one day to see if I can glean more of WTH was going on. Why 4 stars for something I didn't entirely comprehend most of the time...well, there is few reasons for that.

Number one is the dark humor she had going...I was totally there for that. The author also had that humor going on in the Six of Crows duo...but in this it's a little darker and I really liked it. Number two, the characters were super likable...from Alex to Darlington to the side characters whose names I couldn't even guess to how they are spelled. They were awesome...this too reminded me of SOC's duo...such amazing characters, she has really stepped up her character game, since Shadow and Bone series, which I never actually finished. Number three, Alex sees dead people, or grays, as they are called in this story...very Sixth Sense. Lastly, the setting was so well depicted that you can tell that the Author knew this area well. Fun fact...Leigh Bardugo actually graduated from Yale...which I learned by listening to Lauren Fortgang's interview with her at the end of this audiobook.

Lauren Fortgang has narrated on all of Leigh Bardugo's books...at least the ones that I've listened too. I usually always love her narration and did so on this book too...and Michael David Axtell is new to me....but I would definitely not mind listening to something that he's narrated again.

Overall, this was an urban fantasy that's grounded in the real world...with a "we can't let the real world know what exists right in front of their eyes" kind of approach. Delving into Arcane Magic...that which entails forces or phenomena that somehow transcend the natural laws that govern the world by directly manipulating unknown energies that bend the fabric of reality to create the desired effect. I stole that from google, BTW, and now I can't figure out where from. But...from what I did understand in this story...this is exactly what it has going on. So, basically...it's crazy-cool but can also be rather discerning at times.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

This has one of the most unique concepts that I've found in YA fantasy...a library or Archive, if you will, for the dead...with Keepers that keep them in.  Although, in my head, I thought they were leading them to the Archive after their death.   

So, while imaginative...it wasn't always fully elucidated, at least for me, anyway.  I think I felt this was more for the younger of the YA audience and I wasn't fully into it.  Despite that, I would still recommend it...for its uniqueness and likable characters alone and also for the way it deals with the underlying theme of the grief of a sibling.

The narration was quite nice...I always love Piper Goodeve, she may have one of the most pleasant voices I've ever heard on an audiobook.  Although...that can lead to my mind wandering...which it did once in a while.

Race the Sands is the only book by this author that I've read/listened to and I loved it.  Unfortunately, I was about a third of the way through this unique story when I noticed on GR that it is a series...only it still hasn't been published yet, and this book came out in 2014.  I searched around on GR and the internet and near as I can tell HarperCollins bought out Harlequin and they decided not to publish it...but this was a few years ago and supposedly they gave them back to the author and who knows what's up with up the two other books now...😞

I read this through Audible Escape (free trial)...and basically, my rating is heavily influenced by the fact that the next two books are not ever coming out...or don't seem to be...it has been six years after all...but if they do, that'd be cool.  So, if Sara Beth Durst sees this post, could you please release the next two books already...especially if they already been written.

The narrator, Charlotte North, could use some help with varying voices...all her characters sounded the same...but otherwise she had good inflection...and I would listen to her again.

Re-read/listen on Audio...the narration by Amy McFadden was not great...it was not only robotic-sounding but rather cheesy at times...and I know she has improved since this book came out because normally I'm okay with her narration.  While not the greatest narration I've heard...it's not the worse either and I'm still glad I gave this a try on audio.  I've docked a half star, though, for my rating, due to the narration.

From my original review of the eBook...Definitely, something different, I really liked this imaginative story.  This is unlike anything I ever read before and in a good way.  It has a kick-ass heroine and a very likable hero.  It still holds true today and also I would add this is a great start to a series that I really enjoyed overall and while the second and third books don't hold a candle to the wonderment that this book has...they still complete the series really well.  With a dark, insidious setting, in the murky depths of hell...this story is YA Urban Fantasy at its best and most ominous.

The setting has completely changed for this second book...the first book took place in South America, and most of the story played out from inside a jail cell.  This one has moved all the way to Toronto, Canada, next to the only Great Lake that I've never personally seen, Lake Ontario.

Our morally gray characters have started second-guessing themselves a lot...Nita more so than Kovit, and she did a lot of soul-searching throughout this book.  Eventually, she just decided...fuck it...and did what had to be done, and thank goodness...because it was starting to feel like I was caught up in a self-imposed therapy session.

While there were elements I struggled with, I, for the most part, found this engaging and was totally there for the supernatural-ish world that the author has created, because it's so unlike anything I've ever read before.  I did like learning a whole lot more about Kovit, and also there's a dabble of romance or something of the sort.  Really, the whole theme going on here seems to be the question of whether Nita thinks her and Kovit are redeemable or does it even really matter if they're redeemable...since they're just trying to survive in a world that keeps knocking them down.  Actually, I think they deserve a song...Notorious by Adelita's Way...is Nita and Kovit's song...

The narration was very well performed by Almarie Guerra...she could roll her R's quite nicely.  One little weird tidbit, that wouldn't have even mattered if it wasn't for the shit-show we got going on in the world today; sometimes when she said Kovit's name, it sounded like Covid😔😔😔so very tired of that word.

QUESTIONS ABOUT VEILED: (This is part of the Synopsis)

Q: Is this YA?
A: No. The main character is 18 and there is sex, crude language and violence in the book. Readers sensitive to those components may not find the book suitable. If you are a reader who doesn’t like a lot of the “F” word, this is your warning…. All true.  Luckily, the "F" word and I are old friends.

Q: Is there a cliffhanger?
A: Nope! There’s also no cheating and no love triangle (think I’ve covered the bases there!) All true!  

Q: Do I need to read the series (Experiment in Terror) that Veiled is a spinoff of first?
A: Nope.
Absolutely not.  I disagree...I feel like you would have inside knowledge that would enhance this story since they're a ton of references to that series.
Veiled stands alone from that series...It didn't feel like this is true, although I'm totally guessing since I haven't read it.
Don’t listen to anyone say otherwise. EiT fans are very passionate about their series and want to share the love (and I love them for it) BUT Veiled was written specifically for those people who haven’t read EIT.
And furthermore…most importantly…IF you do decide after reading Veiled that you would like to read EIT, then I promise, promise, promise that your enjoyment of that series will not be spoiled or compromised. Trust me on this. EIT is too epic of a series to be spoiled.
PS if you are a passionate EIT fan, Veiled is a great starter to get people interested in this whole “world.” Also, all your favorites do appear in this story as it takes place right after Dust to Dust.  There are definite instances that feel like spoilers to EIT, especially since it takes place after the 9th and final book in the series.

Q: Is it horror? Your other series was and I don’t handle scary very well…

A: No, it’s paranormal romance (though I promise you there are no vampires or werewolves), and while there are creepy elements to the story, it wouldn’t be classified as horror. You’ll be fine.  This is also true.

MY THOUGHTS⇢

Overall, it wasn't too bad, if you're into this type of urban fantasy/paranormal romance, this could be your jam...especially if you've read the Experiment in Terror Series.  Sadly, though, after finishing Veiled, I'm not feeling like I want to read the EIT series, myself.  I already know where they (Perry and Dex) end up, and I even know a few mishaps that they get into.  Also since finishing this book, my second by this author, I'm thinking I'm not necessarily a fan of her writing style.  

The narration was acceptable, but it could have been presented or produced better...it was too quiet by far, especially when she whispered.

๏ My Review ๏ 

I do love when the title of the book is subtly worked into the story, as it is in the above quote. I so went into this wanting to love it, but it just wasn't happening. The first half of this book was a struggle to get through…by far, there is too much silly high school drama. I don't remember the Lux Series being this childish, I actually really liked it. It was overwhelmingly disappointing for me.

With the second half, the story slowly improved little by little…once JLA stopped being so evasive and actually started giving us something plot-wise, anyway. She was so evasive that I found myself wishing I could remember more about the Lux Series, especially the final book, just so I might know wtf was up.


By the ending, it finally felt like something intriguing was being hinted at…unfortunately, I don't know if that hint will be enough for me to continue the series. Maybe, if I wait for the Audio, it will be doable??? I was looking at other reviews for this…and it seems most people loved it…so it's possible I'm in the minority here.

I keep finding reasons (reading challenges) to continue reading this series…even though I'm on the fence about whether I like it or not, and want to continue it.  I'm not saying it's bad…it’s actually well written, with steamy sex scenes and a decent paranormal storyline, but for me personally, I'm just not that into it.  I wonder if my apathetic feelings towards this series as a whole are because of the narration…she seems to imbue this particular series with this sexy, breathy voice that I'm not sure I like.  I have listened to samples of other books she has narrated and she doesn't always sound like that, she actually has a wide range of voice inflections.

I wanted to love this…I have loved the first three books in The Collector's Society.  This has always been a uniquely told book series, but this one was just too out there in left field and left me feeling confused and sadly disappointed.  It felt like it dragged a lot of the time and was the longest 411 pages ever.  I've adored these characters and I have been fascinated with the premise, so I tried to let that reflect in my rating.  I guess, overall I just wanted this play out differently…and that ending…well, I guess ultimately that ending left an opening for this story to play out differently...

I actually finished the last half or so of this book with the Audio version, because I was being plagued by migraines and couldn't continue reading.  I did not care for the narration of this at all, though.  Heather Lyons, in my opinion, this series could have benefitted from a different narrator, in fact adding a male voice would have been worked much better for Finn's parts and for the print version, you really need to have someone proofread it.

FIRST IMPRESSION: Immortals who are not Vampires…I think I like this. 

MY REVIEW IN ONE SENTENCE: A slow-burning, contemplative tale...that is both historical and contemporary.

Nastasya has lived an incredibly long life and because of this, she has so many stories to tell. This story actually snuck up on me slowly, there isn't a lot of action, but there is a lot of introspection. I do have to say for someone who has lived as long as she has…she has a lot of growing up to do. With that being said, I still think she is a cool, and seriously badass chic. I liked her because she seems to be on the right path now.

The world of Immortal Beloved is alluring yet intimidating. It seems to me living that long could get really boring, especially with the life she had been living. On the other hand, think of all the books you could read with that kind of time.
