AUDIOBOOK REVIEW⤏ THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES

BY SUZANNE COLLINS

    NARRATED BY SANTINO FONTANA

    SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS⇣
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute.
The odds are against him. He's been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low. Their fates are now completely intertwined - every choice Coriolanus makes could lead to favor or failure, triumph or ruin. Inside the arena, it will be a fight to the death. Outside the arena, Coriolanus starts to feel for his doomed tribute... and must weigh his need to follow the rules against his desire to survive no matter what it takes.

    MY THOUGHTS⇣

There is going to be a whole lot of reviews out there for this...and most everyone is going to read/listen to it regardless of what the reviews say.  Which they should because it has lots of little tidbits about the series overall, and makes reading/listening worthwhile.  For me, personally...I would've liked it to be shorter.  It was overly bland at times.

Looking at reviews of this on Audible I've seen that many listeners did not like the narration by Santino Fontana, who also voices Joe in You, of which he is perfect for.  I thought his performance was just fine, not quite as good as he is in You...but not bad at all.

While there was no one thing that cried out to me on how Snow became what you see in the OG trilogy, what you actually get is a subtle shaping of sorts.  This is only a slice of his teenage years.  It would have to have more books to really give you a sense of him, as we know him to be.

Bottom line...This could have been so much better if it was told from Lucy Gray's POV.  She is his tribute that he mentors in the 10th annual Hunger Games.  These games have not yet evolved into what we are familiar with, either...but they are subtlety developing towards that end.  Lucy Gray has spunk and determination and I felt like she would have been a better candidate for MC.  Her story felt a whole lot more interesting...because honestly, Snow kind of blows.
