REVIEW⤏ WHEN WE WERE LOST

BY KEVIN WIGNALL

    SYNOPSIS FROM GOODREADS⇣
Survival. It's a concept these high school students never had to consider--until their plane crashes in a remote rainforest with no adults left alive. With many of them falling prey to threats from both the jungle and man, they soon realize that danger comes in many sinister forms.
Tom Calloway didn't want to go on a field trip to Costa Rica, but circumstances had him ending up sitting in the back of the plane--which was the only part that was intact after the crash in the remote South American wilderness. Tom and a small group of his classmates are fortunate to be alive, but their luck quickly runs out when some of them fall prey to the unfamiliar threats of the jungle--animals, reptiles, insects, and even the unforgiving heat. Every decision they make could mean life or death.
As the days go by and the survivors' desperation grows, things get even more perilous. Not everyone can cope with the trauma of seeing their friends die, and a struggle for leadership soon pits them against each other. And when they come across evidence of other people in the middle of the rainforest, does that mean they're safe--or has their survival come to an even more vicious end?

      MY THOUGHTS⇣

The prologue and the epilogue were clearly the best parts of this story.  As for the filler in between...not all bad...it was mostly forgettable, though.  I believe the reason I feel this way, is the characters lacked any real emotion, they did just lose a whole bunch of friends and teachers, after all.  That's in addition to the plane crash.  Plus overall they got their shit together pretty quick...for a bunch of kids.  My guess is...the author doesn't really do drama.

Basically, you get a bunch of kids who crash land...far from where they were originally headed for.  You have the quiet kid, the think-they-know-it-alls, the girls, and a couple of nerdy kids...and the rest, they just want someone to lead them.  It was sort of like The Breakfast Club meets the first few episodes of Lost with a South American jungle setting.  The audio is decently done and the book really flies by...before you even know it, and maybe a little too quickly, and too easily...your closing in on the end of the book.

REVIEW: THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO

      BY TAYLOR JENKINS REID

        SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready, to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life.
When she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn’s life unfolds—revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love—Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn’s story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.
Written with Reid’s signature talent for “creating complex, likable characters” (Real Simple), this is a fascinating journey through the splendor of Old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it takes—to face the truth.

          MY THOUGHTS⇣

This book is loved by many, so I figured I should read/listen to it already...that, and I know Taylor Jenkins Reid can write relationships that are complex, honest and even a little gritty.  After all, she completely won me over with Daisy Jones & the Six.

Did I love it, like others have...not quite...but pretty darn close.  If I had to pinpoint why that is...I would have to say it's probably due to the two main narrators...they really had to grow on me and it took a bit of listening before they did.  At least, Julia Whelan's part was a small one, since I don't really care for her.

Overall, the story itself is fantastic, her chase for that elusive Oscar...and of course, the epic love story with a twist of sorts.  I also loved the little bit of mystery that it had going on too (I had no clue).

          REVIEW⤏ IN AN INSTANT

          BY SUZANNE REDFEARN

            SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Life is over in an instant for sixteen-year-old Finn Miller when a devastating car accident tumbles her and ten others over the side of a mountain. Suspended between worlds, she watches helplessly as those she loves struggle to survive.
Impossible choices are made, decisions that leave the survivors tormented with grief and regret. Unable to let go, Finn keeps vigil as they struggle to reclaim their shattered lives. Jack, her father, who seeks vengeance against the one person he can blame other than himself; her best friend, Mo, who bravely searches for the truth as the story of their survival is rewritten; her sister Chloe, who knows Finn lingers and yearns to join her; and her mother, Ann, who saved them all but is haunted by her decisions. Finn needs to move on, but how can she with her family still in pieces?
Heartrending yet ultimately redemptive, In an Instant is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and carrying on…even when it seems impossible.

Wow, this book is amazing...it had me...from the point of the tragic accident...all the way to the end.  This apparently was an Amazon First Read...and if I realized then what I know now...I would have snatched this one up.  As it was, I listened to this through a KU read & listen.

When I started this, I think I want to say that I didn't like the narration...but honestly, at about ten percent in, the person narrating was the furthest thought from my mind...because the story had sucked me in.  So, basically, she must have been good because her narration never pulled me out of the story.

This book is emotional, of that, there is no doubt, but a lot of it is the good kind of emotional.  It's not just heartbreaking, it's also heart-mending.  You should just read it...or listen to it, whichever is your favorite way to consume books...just do it.

REVIEW⤏ THE UNFINISHED LIFE OF ADDISON STONE

              BY ADELE GRIFFIN

                SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
From the moment she stepped foot in NYC, Addison Stone’s subversive street art made her someone to watch, and her violent drowning left her fans and critics craving to know more. I conducted interviews with those who knew her best—including close friends, family, teachers, mentors, art dealers, boyfriends, and critics—and retraced the tumultuous path of Addison's life. I hope I can shed new light on what really happened on the night of July 28.

When I read the synopsis for this book, I thought, ohhh, this reminds me of Daisy Jones & the Six.  With the interview style audio and a full-cast to recite it.  Sounds enticing...and the audio does play out really similar to Daisy Jones...but the story overall lacked something...like a definitive ending or just something that pulls you in and gets you invested in the story.

Addison Stone felt like a real person, not a made-up one.  One of those people who burns so bright...and then, sadly, burns out way too young.  Her story is one that plays out for real all the time, sadly.  Maybe, that is supposed to be the pull, but maybe, for me, that wasn't quite enough.  The full-cast narration was terrific, though, and that alone made this an engaging listen.

                  MONTHLRE-CAP

                  MARCH

I think we can safely assume that March 2020 is one that none of us will ever forget...and the fun is extending into April...and maybe longer...who knows???  The Quarantine has made it possible for me to get more audiobooks listened too...but not in the same way as most.  I'm considered essential because I work in a grocery store.  We are open 24 hours normally, but with the restrictions, we are now closing at 10 PM.  I have switched to 3rd Shift...because NO customers.  Less exposure, hopefully.  I can listen to books while I'm working now.  It's kind of awesome...just the book part, though, everything else that comes with this...SUCKS!

My stand-outs for the month are The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James, The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros and Nothing To See Here by Kevin Wilson...all three at five stars and a novella by Taylor Jenkins Reid titled Evidence of the Affair...which I listened to for free from Amazon Prime.   An Honorable Mention goes out to Lost Stars by Claudia Gray at four and a half stars.

If you're put off by the ghost aspect of this...you shouldn't be...because it's incorporated into the story so well that it just feels right...like it should be there.  It doesn't overshadow the overall mysteries at play here.  It enhances them, even.  This will easily be one of my top-ten best-reads this year.

                      BY ELLISON COOPER

                        SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
FBI neuroscientist Sayer Altair hunts for evil in the deepest recesses of the human mind. Still reeling from the death of her fiance, she wants nothing more than to focus on her research into the brains of serial killers. But when the Washington D.C. police stumble upon a gruesome murder scene involving a girl who’d been slowly starved to death while held captive in a cage, Sayer is called in to lead the investigation. When the victim is identified as the daughter of a high profile senator, Sayer is thrust into the spotlight.
As public pressure mounts, she discovers that another girl has been taken and is teetering on the brink of death. With evidence unraveling around her, Sayer races to save the second victim but soon realizes that they are hunting a killer with a dangerous obsession…a killer who is closer than she thought.

At times this book blew my mind, others, it felt a tad contrived...but essentially it was an intricately woven story about a diabolical serial killer.  If I try to read too much into it, I found a few things a stretch to the imagination.  If I don't try to read too much into it...I was really quite entertained by this audiobook, and I will totally listen to the next book in the series. The narration was decently done...not mind-blowing or anything...but Danielle Deadwyler's voice felt perfect for the voice of Agent Sayer Altair.
