REVIEW⇢ THE BONE HOUSES

BY EMILY LLOYD-JONES

    SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Since the death of her parents, seventeen-year-old Ryn has been scraping together a meager existence as a gravedigger in a remote village at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.
The risen corpses are known as bone houses and legend says they’re the result of a decades-old curse. After Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the corpses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And, more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?
Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a quest that takes them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both long-forgotten magic and the deeply buried truths about themselves.

      MY THOUGHTS⇣

On the surface, this book has it all.  First, there is the engaging plotline, with walking dead-like creatures that are coming out of the forest and killing the townsfolk...so creepy, and so cleverly wrought.  Second, there is characters with a purpose, one is trying to figure out why the bone houses are all of the sudden coming out of the forest and the other just wants to make maps and maybe find his real parents.  It's all quite magical and even has a zombie-goat and he is so heartwarmingly odd...so, what's not to love...right?

Maybe, it was just me...maybe the writing wasn't engaging enough, or maybe, it was the narration.  For me, I think, this book was brought low due to the fact that I really don't like Moira Quirk as a narrator.  I've tried, and I just can't jell with her accent.  I found my mind wandering whilst listening to this and generally not that into it, no matter how many self-admonishments I gave myself.  Overall, I wanted to like this more than I actually did.
