REVIEW⇢ THE LOST NIGHT

BY ANDREA BARTZ

    SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
What really happened the night Edie died? Ten years later, her best friend Lindsay will learn how unprepared she is for the truth.
In 2009, Edie had New York’s social world in her thrall. Mercurial and beguiling, she was the shining star of a group of recent graduates living in a Brooklyn loft and treating the city like their playground. When Edie’s body was found near a suicide note at the end of a long, drunken night, no one could believe it. Grief, shock, and resentment scattered the group and brought the era to an abrupt end.
A decade later, Lindsay has come a long way from the drug-addled world of Calhoun Lofts. She has devoted best friends, a cozy apartment, and a thriving career as a magazine’s head fact-checker. But when a chance reunion leads Lindsay to discover an unsettling video from that hazy night, she starts to wonder if Edie was actually murdered—and, worse, if she herself was involved. As she rifles through those months in 2009—combing through case files, old technology, and her fractured memories—Lindsay is forced to confront the demons of her own violent history to bring the truth to light.

      MY THOUGHTS⇣

For the most part, this is narrated by Kristen Sieh as Lindsay and I liked her better in this than I did another audiobook.  But the best part is we get a separate narrator for each person whose head we are in.  Which I like a lot.  Did the excellent narration carry this story?  I don't really know, but a lot of other people didn't really care for this book, so maybe.  But in all seriousness, I found the story within this mystery rather fascinating.

It delves into the mysteries of our memories and how our brain can play tricks on us and makes us remember are memories differently, especially if it's something we don't want to remember. It shows the highs and lows of being a 20-something, especially the dark side of getting blackout drunk or just drinking excessively, without glorifying it.  Although, it helps that I've done some hard-partying myself in the past and it's probably why this resonated with me.

If you can relate to characters who once relished the party life and everything that goes with that, and you also like an unreliable narrator, then this could totally be your jam.  I also saw on Andrea Bartz's website that this is being optioned by Cartel Entertainment for development as a limited series, with Mila Kunis’ Orchard Farm set to produce, so we'll see if that happens.

          MY THOUGHTS⇣

This is my third book in Star Wars Disney Canon Novels and despite really liking Rogue One (the movie), I didn't like this as much as Solo or Most Wanted.  It was okay, but it didn't grab me like those books did.  Maybe, it was the lack of droids or the narration or the timing of when I read it.  It could even possibly be the constant back in forth of timelines; that I couldn't follow, or maybe it was the writing. Not to say that I don't like Beth Revis' writing, just that possibly since Rae Carson's Most Wanted was the first Star Wars book I listened too, maybe I like her writing best because she was what I cut my teeth on, so to speak.

It's not as if it's lacking action, because there is plenty of that and it also has heartfelt moments too...and it was interesting to get a backstory for Jyn...one that fit with her character in Rogue One.  Overall, I think it was a little of each of those reasons above that made it less than spectacular for me.

But what she doesn’t count on is this straight-laced boy becoming another distraction. With her entire future riding on this movie, Lacey knows she can’t afford to get sidetracked by a crush. But for the first time in her life, Lacey wonders if it’s true that the best stories really do happen when you go off-script.

If I summed this book up in one word, it would be AWKWARD.  It felt like it was fumbling about and basically came off as nonserious & sorta campy, just like the zombie movie she was making within the story.  Everything about it, for me, was awkward.  From the romance...to each and every character...to the flimsy mystery.  It was not what I was expecting from a Kasie West Novel.  I've read a couple of others by her and enjoyed them...despite not being the target audience for her books.

Even the narration was awkward...because I usually like Caitlin Kelly.  I can't help but feel that her interpretation of these characters was similar to mine because it felt like she adjusted her voice accordingly for her portrayal of them.

Told mainly from the POV of Shay, and interspersed with POV's of a few other key players, with a few flashbacks to the past, everything slowly converges, like watching a painting come together.  I think this book reads similarly to their other books, it's not only well-written it's paced out just so...with its slow, almost painfully slow at times, build-up.  I actually found myself struggling to get into this, but eventually, it finally started going somewhere and clicking with me, which is exactly what happened in their first two books for me.

While being somewhat twisty, this didn't have the over-the-top crazy kind of twist that The Wife Between Us had, and I liked that.  The suspense was nicely dialed up for the last quarter of the book...and it ultimately concluded with a killer ending, making my earlier struggles worthwhile.

                SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
The rite has existed for as long as anyone can remember: when the prince who will be king comes of age, he must venture out into the gray lands, slay a fierce dragon, and rescue a damsel to be his bride. This is the way things have always been.
When Ama wakes in the arms of Prince Emory, she knows none of this. She has no memory of what came before she was captured by the dragon or what horrors she faced in its lair. She knows only this handsome prince, the story he tells of her rescue and her destiny of sitting on a throne beside him. It’s all like a dream, like something from a fairy tale.
As Ama follows Emory to the kingdom of Harding, however, she discovers that not all is as it seems. There is more to the legends of the dragons and the damsels than anyone knows—and the greatest threats are not behind her, but around her, and closing in.

I've never heard of a penis being referred to as a yard before, and it's done in this book repeatedly.  In fact, the whole entire story hinges on his (the kings) yard.  It was actually comical, at times.  This book has many harsh reviews, in fact, I think they are what drew me to read this at all...I just needed to see what all the fuss was about...and since it was a fairly short story, I figured why not?

The narration wasn't great...and it wasn't terrible either.  She just spoke in a really husky, kind of whispery voice.  Almost as if she was trying to make it sound sexy.  Which only added to my feeling that this was not something that should be classified as YA.  Overall, this was more uncouth than anything else...but the ending was just about perfect...so, go figure.  In fact, it gave me enough satisfaction that I don't even regret listening to this.

                    SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
Since the death of her parents, seventeen-year-old Ryn has been scraping together a meager existence as a gravedigger in a remote village at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.
The risen corpses are known as bone houses and legend says they’re the result of a decades-old curse. After Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the corpses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And, more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?
Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a quest that takes them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both long-forgotten magic and the deeply buried truths about themselves.

                      MY THOUGHTS⇣

On the surface, this book has it all.  First, there is the engaging plotline, with walking dead-like creatures that are coming out of the forest and killing the townsfolk...so creepy, and so cleverly wrought.  Second, there is characters with a purpose, one is trying to figure out why the bone houses are all of the sudden coming out of the forest and the other just wants to make maps and maybe find his real parents.  It's all quite magical and even has a zombie-goat and he is so heartwarmingly odd...so, what's not to love...right?

Maybe, it was just me...maybe the writing wasn't engaging enough, or maybe, it was the narration.  For me, I think, this book was brought low due to the fact that I really don't like Moira Quirk as a narrator.  I've tried, and I just can't jell with her accent.  I found my mind wandering whilst listening to this and generally not that into it, no matter how many self-admonishments I gave myself.  Overall, I wanted to like this more than I actually did.

But Autumn might not be tough enough. After a drug deal gone wrong, Autumn is beaten, bound, and held hostage. Now, trapped between life and death, she leaves her body, seeking help. No one can sense her presence–except her sister.
When Autumn doesn’t come home, Ivy just knows she’s in trouble. Unable to escape the chilling feeling that something isn’t right, Ivy follows a string of clues that bring her closer to rescuing her sister… and closer to danger.
Autumn needs Ivy to find her before time runs out. But soon, both sisters realize that finding her also means untangling the secrets that lead to the truth–about where they’re hiding Autumn, and what Autumn has been hiding.

                          MY THOUGHTS⇣

There are elements in this book that totally worked for me and a few that fizzled...as in they felt unnecessary to me.  They felt like the author was trying to be TOO relevant.  Having lost my own Mother, the stuff she touched on pertaining to the death of their mother really resonated with me, though.

This book has a lot going on...shady drug deals, a robbery, dog-loving, nerdy band geeks, board-game playing, death of a parent, a barely-there parent, a step-parent who favors their own child, an embarrassing parent, sex between step-siblings, an A-sexual coming out, friends that are there for you, the bonds of sisterhood and an invisible ghost-like haunting, or like a pushing-in-the-right-direction-ghosting (that part really made the story, btw), plus a whole slew more.  Most of these elements completely worked...some were a tad much or left me tuning out.  But, the message in this book, is a very important one.  When are children are trying to tell us something, when they are crying out for help...we should listen and respond.  There's a little bit more to it than that...but I'm trying not to spoil too much.

Overall, I recommend this book for teens that are high school age, because it deals with mature themes, and parents of teens and basically anyone else with a connection to teens.  The narration was really good...there is a distinct difference between the two narrators, but I'm not really a fan of Emma Galvin's nasally voice.

                          REVIEW⇢ THE GRACE YEAR

                          BY KIM LIGGETT

                          SYNOPSIS FROM AUTHORS WEBSITE⇣
No one speaks of the grace year. It’s forbidden. Girls are told they have the power to lure grown men from their beds, drive women mad with jealousy. They believe their very skin emits a powerful aphrodisiac, the potent essence of youth, of a girl on the edge of womanhood. That’s why they’re banished for their sixteenth year, to release their magic into the wild so they can return purified and ready for marriage. But not all of them will make it home alive.
Sixteen-year-old Tierney James dreams of a better life—a society that doesn’t pit friend against friend or woman against woman, but as her own grace year draws near, she quickly realizes that it’s not just the brutal elements they must fear. It’s not even the poachers in the woods, men who are waiting for their chance to grab one of the girls in order to make their fortune on the black market. Their greatest threat may very well be each other.
With sharp prose and gritty realism, The Grace Year examines the complex and sometimes twisted relationships between girls, the women they eventually become, and the difficult decisions they make in-between.

                            MY THOUGHTS⇣

Emily Shaffer absolutely brought Tierney to life...she was perfect. I'm so glad I experienced this book in both reading and listening formats. It still made me cry the second time around. My review below is my review for the book in eARC format⇣

                            Wow! This book...

This book is a lot of things...dubious, challenging, frustrating, darkly horrifying, curing, wonderful, loving, saddening, hopeful & most of all empowering.

I first started reading this about two months ago and had to stop because I just wasn't feeling it...I thought this is a premise that would never come to pass...or so help us all. I couldn't wrap my head around this society where women not only outnumber men, but their rights are so marginalized by these men, it's unthinkable, unbelievable. They are treated as property and made to go through a year away from everything they know to expel their magic. When they come back from this supposed magic-letting they are forced to marry the guy that chose them...and if no one chooses them (because women outnumber the men)...they have to work for the good of the community. This book will push your buttons...for sure.

The second time I started it, I found this enthralling...I devoured it in very little time. The Grace Year has earned a spot as one of my favorites of all time and I don't think I will ever forget it. I especially won't forget how it made me feel by the time I finished it. I was stunned, with everything that happens, and...So. Much. Happens. This one has all the feels, from the good to the bad, and everything in between.
